With the economy affecting the horse market, we have cut back on our breeding program. It takes a lot of time and money to produce a foal and get it to a marketable age. There is still a market for quality horses but its a buyers market. Young stock can currently be purchased for much less than what it costs to produce them.
I have raised Quarter Horses for over 30 years The farm we live on has been in the family since 1884. There hasn't been a year go by that there weren't horses on this land, usually a foal or two running around. It is my hope that there always will be.
Our mares foal in the pasture between April and June. We believe foals thrive on sunshine, green grass and fresh air. Growing up in the pasture they learn to be horses from horses. We don't handle them much before they're weaned. All of our mares have good dispositions and so far all of Champ's foals have been naturally friendly and inquisitive and have readily taken to attention from human folk.
